Laundry Soap. Yes, really!

#1
I know half of you are already thinking "Elrood, WTF?!?!", and the other half are probably actually saying it. Lol. I did too until I figured out that by making my own I'm spending $10 A YEAR total for laundry soap. Pretty crazy. And the stuff works amazingly well, even for people with sensitivities. No crazy detergents, so it just plain works.

Here's all it is (I get everything from Menards)
1 box Borax (65oz.) $3.98
1 box Washing Soda (55oz.) - I get Arm & Hammer brand $3.53
2 bars Fels Naptha - $0.86 ea.

I use a cheese grater to grate the Fels Naptha, then mix it all together in a big container. It makes a lot - I'd recommend at least an 8 or 10 quart container, bigger if you want plenty of room to mix. One tip, the washing Borax is kind of dusty. Make sure you pour it in your container in an area with good ventilation so you don't gasp in a lung full like I did. Doesn't hurt anything, just.... nasty.

So, yeah, that's my thing.  Lol

I'd be interested in trying this - do you know how it works on fading darker clothes when it washes?

No fading at all. I've used the mix for 3 years now, and I'm still impressed. Usually the cheaper solution is cheaper for a reason.
